What is CBD?
Also known as cannabis oil, cannabidiol oil, hemp oil, and even marijuana oil in some circles, CBD is a potent herbal remedy used to heal the body of pain, stress, sleeplessness, anxiety, and hormonal imbalance.
It is best known for treating pain, although quite a number of people now consume it daily to improve their general wellbeing.
The term CBD is a short form of the word cannabidiol. Cannabidiol is not just one of many cannabinoids (special compounds found in the leaves and flowers of the marijuana and hemp plants) that are known to have therapeutic benefits; it is the most powerful one.
As implied in the explanation above, cannabidiol can be derived from the leaves and flowers of the hemp plant, and from the leaves and flowers of the marijuana plant.
Once extracted, it is normally infused in other oils such as organic hemp seed oil or coconut oil before being sold.
Apart from cannabidiol, the second-most active cannabinoid in the marijuana plant is THC (Tetrahydrocannabinol). This cannabinoid also has therapeutic benefits. However, it also alters the mind; it is the substance in marijuana that makes you feel “high.”
Nevertheless, the hemp plant has very little THC in it. Hence, hemp-derived CBD oil (hemp CBD oil) will not make you high. Whereas marijuana has considerable concentrations of THC in it. Hence, marijuana-derived CBD oil (cannabis oil) can make you high.
“Why all these stories?”
Because hemp CBD oil and cannabis oil are two different beasts. In many countries, the former is legal because it doesn’t alter the mind, while the latter is illegal because it has the mind-altering THC.
Also, in most countries, THC is usually the actual substance that is listed in legislation as an illegal substance; not marijuana.
What is more, it is THC that is tested for during cannabis drug testing. This means that those who take hemp oil will not be flagged, and hence cannot be arrested, while those who take cannabis oil may be flagged because they will have THC in their systems.
What is the actual legal status of CBD in South Africa; the summary
CBD is 100% legal in South Africa in both forms.
Hemp cannabidiol oil is 100% legal.
Cannabis oil is also 100% legal.
Why Hemp CBD oil is legal
Hemp is legal for two reasons.
First, there has never been a legislation that banned the use of hemp. Hemp plant just like any plant can be cultivated anywhere in South Africa and used appropriately.
Secondly, hemp does not contain THC, which has been a banned substance in the country.
Thus, one can get hemp-derived cannabidiol oil from anywhere they find it in the country and use it appropriately.
However, there is something you should know; no medicine containing hemp has yet been approved by SAHPRA (South African Health Products Regulatory Authority). Therefore, hemp CBD oils cannot be advertised as offering any health benefits. They can only be advertised as dietary supplements. It is up to you to research the health benefits, consult your doctor, and decide what to do.
Nevertheless, even though no medicine has been approved, the benefits of cannabidiol are there for all to see.
Why cannabis oil is legal
For the longest time, in this country, marijuana and THC have been illegal. Marijuana was initially prohibited in 1928 by the Medical, Dental, and Pharmacy Act of 1928.
Subsequent legislation also banned the use of marijuana and THC.
However, this year, the Constitutional Court of South Africa ruled that South Africans can use marijuana in private.
The court gave parliament 24 months to enact a law to guide the use of marijuana.
Therefore, as of now, one can legally possess cannabis and/ or cannabis oil.
This means that you will get to see more and more people selling and buying cannabis oil in the coming few months.
Nevertheless, you should know that you will get high is you consume cannabis oil because of THC. This may make it dangerous for you to drive or to operate heavy machinery after taking a couple of drops of the oil.
You may also not like the feeling in general.
Moreover, there are not that many manufacturers of pure cannabis oil. This is because it remains illegal in most countries. The lack of quality suppliers means there is little competition and therefore low-quality products. You are better off sticking to hemp CBD oils, which are produced by dozens if not hundreds of manufacturers.
